Should democrats protect the speaker? I dunno. It won't hurt them if he falls, but it might hurt some other things like aid. And given that they split that shit up anyways it is doubtful anything will come of it. And seeing GOP go through another speakership shows the country what a mess they are now. But then...putting Johnson in a position where he has to promise to push stuff through can be good. Unless of course he is full of shit, which is fully possible. If they extract concessions from Mike Johnson to keep him in power and effectively create the first coalition government, the statement in 2024 is "Republicans were so bad at governing that they needed Democrats to enable them". Honestly, I think they have a much higher chance of success if they make that deal than if they hold out until a handful of Republicans are desperate enough to name Jeffries Speaker. Everyone is incentivized to not be the guy who switched sides, but Mike Johnson is incentivized to hold power by dealing with the only people who can give him power. And in politics, the subversive move often wins over the overt move.
