For girls in science, the time is now
Programs in science, technology, engineering, and math are boosting a new generation of female students—and countering some familiar barriers to success.
Sixteen-year-old Shriya Reddy can't remember a time when she wasn’t excited about science. At seven, she read biology books with her mother, who was studying for her medical board exams. By sixth grade, Reddy was competing in rigorous science fairs. The summer before ninth grade she began doing research in a bioengineering lab at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where she devised a noninvasive approach for rapidly diagnosing melanoma lesions. The project earned her a top prize at the prestigious International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) last May.

Creating harmony between energy and the environment
In the delicately balanced ecosystems of the Amazon, meeting demand for electricity requires a particularly sensitive approach.
The Brazil nut tree might tower over its neighbours, reaching heady heights of 160 feet with a majestic crown that spreads over 100 feet in diameter, but it is an extremely sensitive plant; it refuses to grow anywhere other than undisturbed areas of the Amazonian rainforest. Despite commercial efforts, Brazil nut trees cannot be cultivated in pure stands because they rely on a complex interaction of Amazonian species to bear fruit: they require large native bees that visit (particular) orchids to pollinate their flowers and their seeds are exclusively dispersed by a small tree rodent called an agoutis . The Brazil nut tree is perhaps symbolic of the amazingly delicate balance of the Amazonian rainforest and the crucial importance of protecting this unique environment.
The Amazonian rainforest is around two million square miles of some of the most intense ecosystems on the planet. It is estimated that ten percent of the world’s species call it home, including 40,000 species of plants, 1,300 species of birds, 3,000 fish, 430 mammals, and more than 2.5 million species of insect. Scientists are constantly discovering new species and learning their value—many medicines are derived from plants and animals found only in the Amazon. Beyond its unique and precious biodiversity, the Amazon also acts as the lungs of the planet. Its trees absorb the carbon dioxide we exhale and produce by burning fossil fuels, and they also create around six percent of the world’s oxygen. Without the Amazon rainforest, the planet might struggle to breathe.
But in the last fifty years around seventeen percent of the Amazon has been cleared for logging, mining, farming, and grazing—practises that are on the rise. This deforestation is a double blow: the forest is often cleared by fires releasing their carbon into the atmosphere while at the same time the loss of the trees reduces the planet’s ability to absorb the excess carbon we create. A recent report suggests the Amazon may now be producing more CO2 than it is absorbing. More than ever, there is an urgent need to reduce CO2 emissions, crucially by switching to more sustainable sources of energy such as solar, wind, geothermal, and hydro power. And the 4,000 miles of Amazon River, fed by the world’s highest rainfall, seems ideal for generating hydroelectricity.

Trump is trying to buy off foreign scientists We already know that he cut the pandemic response team from the White House two years ago. Going back to the moon is essential to national security? But protecting the population from pollution, climate change and global pandemics is unimportant? Ok. Get a load of this: This story has been confirmed. The Germans aren’t interested because they believe any breakthrough should be available to the whole world. Trump thinks anyone can be bought because he can be bought. And by the way, this really makes you wonder if the reason the US refused to use the WHO test is that Trump wanted to only use a test for which the US had “exclusive rights.” The man believes everything in the world can be dealt with like a licensing deal for cheap ties and bad cologne. digbysblog.net/2020/03/trump-is-trying-to-buy-off-foreign-scientists/

GOP always clutches their pearls that someone is politicizing a crisis, when in fact, it is GOPs modus operindi.
I think it is time to call out, loud and clear, how they are dismantling the government functions, that we need when we require a national response to a crisis.

And The Trampster only breaks things so he can say "I fixed it." Following the Rethuglican logic I can state they will disappear on November 3rd because they are BAD!

Weather.com Doesn't Do Math & Logic.
Our rainfall for Saturday was .48 inches. Our rainfall for Sunday was .57 inches. My lifelong math skills says that's 1.05 inches. Weather.com reports .94 inches total this morning. This kind of reporting is a regular thing with them. It doesn't fit any logic or math that I know. Weather.com 'always' subtracts rainfall. To say that their math doesn't add up is an understatement.
This will be the last time I will post about this because like the missing rainfall it will just disappear.

We Can Live Without Celebrities & Sports.
I always pass up stories about celebrities. Whether they get 'the virus' or not won't interest me either. There's too many regular people suffering thru this that need help and care. And the Queen is quarantined so she's safe too. Enough said!
The Satellite networks offer plenty of historic games the same as they do with game shows. Tho I'd rather watch old Westerns or Earth Mysteries.
By the way, I think I've solved the mystery of lost civilizations. It's very simple. They run out of food or there's a plague or an earthquake. And just like a flower, they bloom, go to seed, and move away or die. And they leave behind beauty and wisdom and clues about life for us to ponder.

A few possibilities: 1) Maybe they've got an overnight double counting problem. Which is concerning 2) There's a boatload of weather stations in the underlying data so maybe some of them report both Saturday and Sunday while others only report weekend totals? Which probably would result in downward revisions on the whole as overnight evaporation would not be properly accounted for 3) Or there really was a different rainfall at those weather stations 4) Weather is an imprecise science? Though.... a 10% revision factor is stunning.

I really don't know how to summarize this article though I don't like the headline. It's an article of how information on COVID infections is being made available but how difficult it is for people who need that information to get it. The problem I have with the headline is that it's using a quote from someone frustrated that he discovered his COVID risk by chance rather than being contacted directly and calling it an irresponsible lack of transparency but they're being transparent. They just might not be proactive... or possibly they're simply overwhelmed by the number of things that they have in the fire. It's not that his idea is bad (call people directly if they were on a flight with a confirmed case), I just don't know if they have the logistic power to implement at this point www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-travel-information-confusion-covid-1.5498778Though Air Canada's ability to pass the buck is legendary.

My own daughter-in-law thinks she has the Virus even tho she hasn't been tested. This is what happens when Republicans destroy health care for the whole country. And like five year olds they point at Democrats and say, "He did it!"

Question: How can you say rainfall was lower if you already measured and reported it? Plus, their math is bad week after week like I posted. I don't think it's a conspiracy or anything sinister-just illogical and weird!

That it's always lower eliminates 3 and 4 as options as both are imprecision which should result in equally frequent shifts in either direction. 1 and 2 would both favor consistently downward revisions. Agreed on the illogical and weird, it's just making me really curious.

It's getting pretty interesting here in Europe.
More and more borders closed (which was one of the founding principles of the EU), which makes sense I guess.
EU president proposed a 30-day ban on internal EU travel.
Rampant cases increase with the relative deaths unfortunately.
UK and Sweden not doing much as of right now, but I foresee things will close in any case.
Italy cases are increasing but at a lower rate - perhaps we are near the peak or just passing it.
I'm sure you're reading the rest.
