Ever wanted to see an A320 drift? (Everyone is fine. There are no reports of injuries) Was it the wind or pilot error?

Ever wanted to see an A320 drift? (Everyone is fine. There are no reports of injuries) Was it the wind or pilot error? Neither. If you've ever seen a crosswind landing, you've seen planes do a crab maneuver where they don't point down the runway but into the wind at such an angle that they're flying straight to the runway. Now, a good pilot will get out of the crab and sideslip the last little distance. Bad pilots, however, land in the crab because the friction with the runway will immediately shoot the plane into alignment with the runway. It's a bad pilot maneuver because it means you're putting a *lot* of force upon the passengers in the plane, especially those at the back who are being thrown the across the runway in about 3 seconds*. This means that in good landing conditions, it's impossible to do that and crosswind can't pull it off. The comments to the post actually give a good answer: hydroplaning. Specifically, the front wheel hitting the water, getting massive friction but losing contact with the runway, while the main landing gear is trying to run at the original speed of the plane creates massive conflicting forces and the easiest resolution is to turn the plane. All you need is a little force to the side to get the forces out of one dimension to allow for the cascading shift which crosswind will happily provide. * Imagine an A380 with a 30 degree offset (no idea if that's possible). Length of an A380 is 73m. Half that is 36.5m. 30 degree offset would be half again so 18.25m off centerline. 18.25m ~ 60ft. And it really is like 3 seconds.

King Charles diagnosed with cancer - no specific type disclosed or what stage. Now pls tell me why he's important. Legally or ethically? Legally, because it's more expensive* to remove the monarchy than it is to just tolerate their oddities so long as they only remain oddities. Ethically, it's a bankrupt institution that is only mildly redeemed by the fact that the main line seems to at least be trying to adapt to modern sensibilities. * The last time Canada tried to modify its constitution - which failed - it pissed off Quebec so much that they voted 49% to leave Canada. I mean, it was partly because the time before that also failed and both attempts were to deal with the fact that the time before that, the federal government opted to strike a deal with the other 9 provinces because they found Quebec's demands too extreme but still... removing the monarchy for Canada brings up all sorts of issues. Imagine trying to do that for Britain. Does Scotland come up? Northern Ireland? Etc. Also, if Charles lost all his titles, he would still be the #1 land owner in the UK

What I'm talking about for the crosswalk landings.... Used to see them come in 'sideways' over Donington Park race circuit when the wind was bad, (while I was there marshalling). (Because the circuit is west of East Midlands airport that aligned E-W). Do google map links work? www.google.com/maps/place/Donington+Park+Circuit/@52.8293639,-1.371109,14z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x4879e5b01faf9adb:0x19ff9aa43b6751bb!8m2!3d52.8295324!4d-1.3814516!16zL20vMDIyc3Zk?entry=ttu

After a number of online err... discussions about immigration, I can at least point to one good thing about Brexit: it's made people realise just how much impact and choice our government has over immigration itself. In the US, however, the impact and nature of immigration and the different government departments etc. still don't seem to be fully understood - but that's mainly due to GOP propaganda (The amount of people that don't seem to understand the different effects of legal and illegal immigration and who/what is responsible for dealing with both, how and why, is not good...)

This fucking meme needs to die
Every professional Engineer and Scientist will absolutely conclude the answer is 1 because they have to communicate with that short hand constantly. And yet, everyone who's finished High School Math will cite BEDMAS until their blue in the face, ignoring that the rules exist to serve those who use and communicate numbers every day and they've already concluded that the answer is 1.

Parentheses being first is why they exist to begin with, though... If we're going to ignore them, then why bother?
