Option 1: MMR Board with stickied daily MMR and free form thread creation In this structure, we created a daily MMR for the major bullets of the day and discussions can happen either within the thread or with threads we create separately
Option 2: Theme Boards (eg: Politics, News, Science, Environment, Sports, etc) In this structure, we create boards for general themes and people make threads about a given topic. Obviously some topics might belong to different boards so it could be individual's preference - though we will tend to develop social tendencies and patterns will emerge.
Regardless of which structure we pick, I would strongly advocate that these are advisories rather than fixed rules. We want this community to be loose and friendly and that can get bogged down by structure
Which brings me to the subject of rules: I'd like to suggest the rule of "be a human being". We can start listing off items that we don't like but ultimately, we're willing to work with each other's rough edges. Everything else is just about respecting one another and their situations.

I'm good with either; i just want to make sure we get a consensus.

There is another board I use now and then which has "stickies' I don't quite understand what they are, purpose, etc. Can we reply specifically to someone or does this just go down and if I'm late reading and want to respond to someone's comment in the top five, but now there are over 550 comments, do I just pop it in?
Posing these questions to show what someone not used to many of these might want to know in case you want to put in a "how to use" FAQ

I prefer Option 1. I usually am working so a running free rage discussion is about all I can handle. What ever works best for the group is great with me though.

I like the idea of a FAQ section. I am new to posting on forums and would hate for more seasoned commentators to suffer through my newbie fumbling about.

I think daily MRR style posts is fine - we can always have themes too, but most of the time we used to just hang out in one place, swampland. That was it. It gets so fractous to move between different discussions. However having themes are nice for history in the case we need to pull something up. But whatever.

Like for instance, is there an edit button or must I be really really careful to proof my posts - even though I am reading between the lines quite literally. ( be careful not to drop your phone face down on a ferry deck.) Aaannd - never mind! Found the help.

I'd like to see a daily MMR post under which we can post links, thoughts, etc. It looks like we're all on board with that idea.
Beyond that, I'm open to thoughts on other threads.

Hey Guys, i'm bumbling through this myself. It looks like the Swamphive is taking shape! My 2¢ : YES to themes - but not too many to start with. Back when Swampland started, we didn't have an MMR and we really have "theme" threads, but, rather, the conversation moved from post to post during the day. AMC might kick things off with some political snark, we'd comment, she might reply, then Karen would post something she found interesting from the Hill and we'd run over to her, abandoning Ana, then Joe would post and we'd piss all over him...etc.etc. Occasionally, some threads had "legs" - Mark Thompson's military updates had a life of their own (until he got spun off as "Battleland", sadly). But, with each successive comment system WP>DISQUS>LF commenting on multiple threads became tedious. Once MMRs got established, it was easier to hang in one place. My vote would be to start with Politics, Sports and Food as themes and see where we go from there.

This is especially useful when you have say a gaming forum with lots of subjects but there should always be a quick way to find the forum rules or latest from developers etc. We could create it so we have folders with say charts, good articles etc at the very top and then the rest of the daily stuff below.

I spent most of my life avoiding writing anything until I felt compelled to respond to a Joe Klein post that was so offensively shallow and condescending I had to wade in. I lurked for years reading great and thoughtful comments so it was intimidating but I never felt anything but welcome After I started posting. I'm sure you will feel the same way. I for one welcome new voices and after all this is brand new place and you're in on the ground floor!

We need a life section where we can talk about our lives Not as convinced about Music or Food - there wasn't very often that we talked about them outside the scope of "discussions/events that happened in my life"
